President Obama is not the Anti-christ. I could get into the doctrine of the Anti-christ and explain how most people's ideas of eschatology (study of the end times) is very confused and unBiblical in this regard, but that's not the point of this article.
The point of this article is that many of my right-wing, evangelical, fundamental, Christian friends treat President Obama as if he is the anti-christ and oppose him at every step, right or wrong. I've even had some young people ask me if I think he is the Anti-christ.
At the beginning of the school year, Sept. 8, 2009, President Obama made an address to the school children of the country. He encouraged them to work hard, stay in school, and to obey their parents and teachers. You would have thought he was organizing a Hitler Youth rally by the outcry on the right. It was a great speech, it was well timed, and it was long overdue; I hope it starts a tradition.
President Obama has the right stance on the issue of Net Neutrality, as well. John McCain and many of our right-wing friends have been sadly deluded into thinking that the Internet belongs to Corporations. No, it does not. It belongs to the people of the United States of America - our taxes paid for it's development and, for the most part, to sustain it. The Internet has been likened to a highway. Well, how would you feel about the government letting corporations who are located next to ramps decide whether visitors from out-of-state can get on or off the highway near you? Ridiculous! Futhermore, Net Neutrality is not new. The Internet was invented with Net Neutrality as a guiding principle; it has until now not needed government regulation to enforce it. Since the government gave corporations the right to provide access to the Internet, they now want to use that ability to dictate who can and cannot have access. Net Neutrality just says, "nope, you can't do that - equal access for all." Nothing wrong with that!
And there are many other examples where we should praise and encourage the President in his correct thinking and policy on several matters. But, I'm not here to praise the President, only to show that there are places where we can support him. To not support him on the things he says and does that are correct is wrong of us and reveals the malice in our own hearts.
President Obama is wrong on abortion, wrong on healthcare, wrong on the economy, wrong on Iraq, and wrong about many other things. But, that doesn't make him evil; just wrong. When we speak and behave as if everything he does is evil, we make ourselves into reactionist nay-sayers, rather than level-headed thinkers. We are no better than those on the left (including the corporate media) that love everything he says and forbare critical evaluation. For the sake of our country and our future, can we stop the thoughtless attacks? There is plenty to critisize that is legitimate without resorting to illigitimate and polarizing denunciation. |
