Read {bible}James 2:1-13{/bible} read v 1 again Partiality has no place in service to Jesus because of who He is. - Who is He? (creator of everyone, God, judge of all, etc).
- What is partiality? (treating someone differently because of what they do for you (ie through wealth or power) rather than on the basis of Christian love.
read vs 2-7 Example 1 The Rich How might someone show favoritism to a peer who is rich? Why is that wrong? What do they hope to get out of the relationship? Will it be productive (ie: will it work?)? What will happen to that relationship ultimately? (probably will work only for a time and then the rich person may become resentful of the person who is only their friend because of their wealth or stuff). |

Read James 1:22-27
Read again v. 22 "Be doers of the word and not hearers only"
Everyone stand up. How many heard me? (everyone) How many responded (most - if not all, some quickly, some slowly). Sit down.
What is the difference between "hear" and "listen"? (discussion: hearing is when your ear transfers vibrations on the ear drum in such a way that your brain can interpret it as sound - listen is to think about the sounds or words being heard for meaning or emotional input).
Are you a hearer of the Word? (example: daily devotions - Big Church - Sunday School - small groups - mid-Week Bible Study, etc). Are you a listener of the Word? Do you focus on the speaker? Do you think about what you heard or read? Do you mediate on the meaning and impact of the Word to your life? If not, you are a hearer only and not a listener.

Before I even begin, I'm not one of those who have been maligned by someone on Wikipedia (as of this writing) and am not writing this as "revenge." I'm writing out of a sense of moral indignation and a feeling of foolhardiness. I used to be a big believer in Wikipedia and recommended it as a source of reliable information. After all, what could be better than a place where the experts on every conceivable subject could freely contribute to the greatest reference work of all time for the benefit of us all? How naive. |

You may or may not have ever heard of this thing called “Speaking in Tongues.” However, the term is used for something that happens in a lot of churches in America as well as around the world that claim to teach the Bible. These churches often look very similar to ours and they may even teach the same things we teach on a lot of subjects. As you get older you are going to meet people, if you haven’t already — some who are Christians and some who are “Christians” (that is they claim to be, but are not) — who believe that they are following what Jesus wants them to do by “Speaking in Tongues.” But, in actual fact, they are either lying or have believed a lie. We generally call these people, “Charismatic.”
There are also other errors in the teaching of these churches, many having to do with other spiritual gifts, such as healing, predictive prophesy, special revelations called “a word of knowledge,” and etc., but we are going to just going to focus on “Speaking in Tongues” today.
